Water, nature, fashion, music and nostalgia for her childhood era, i.e., the 80’s, are main inspirations. Hofmann, feeling trapped by paralysis at times, sees water as a symbol of freedom and fluidity. Abstract imagery of water/fluids such as wild, gestural marks and splatters are repeated in her work. As a member of minority groups and an Asian female with a disability, she incorporates bright palettes and neons as way of taking up space and being heard. Using a range of techniques and unconventional tools, i.e. wheels from her wheelchair to push/mix paints, she encourages viewers to see the wheelchairs as catalysts that can move things forward or create change as opposed to having negative connotations of disabilities. Most of her work is stamped with wheel track marks, emphasizing the idea of inclusion and making her mark in this world.
