I'd had a visit to the Camargue region in the south of France on my bucket list for quite some time. The area is home to an ancient breed of horse indigenous to this area and believed to be descended from prehistoric horses. The Camargue horses run relatively freely under the stewardship of Les Gardians, the Camargue cowboys, who use them for livestock management and to guard the wild, black bulls used in local bullfights. The marshes and wetland areas they’re found in as well as the numbers in their herds provide a fantastic opportunity for some very special photography.

The sun had just risen when I took this shot. Twelve horses in total were heading into the middle of the water enjoying some respite from the mosquitos which are rife in the marshland area. When there’s barely a breeze, they’re even worse, but it does mean almost glass like water for amazing reflections.
