I'd been sketching with some friends at the MoMA and, as we were getting ready to leave, I looked through the huge windows at the line of people waiting to get into the museum. It immediately struck me as a scene I would love to paint, so I made some quick sketches and took lots of photos.
Because this is such a busy scene, I spent a lot of time in the planning stage simlifying shapes and omitting unecessary details. I restricted my palette to cool tones that would offset the warm tones of the lights. I changed the colors of coats, hats, and even cars to fit in with this theme.
Usually, the figures in my paintings are much sketchier, but here - since they're standing still and a important part of the composition right in the foreground - I felt it was important to give them personalities.
