The shoot at Clearview Kigers in southern Ontario came about after several months of planning. I first met the farm's owners after a recent relocation to Toronto and our mutual love of horses sparked an idea. I hadn't come across the Kiger horse before. This rare Spanish mustang is one of the world's rarest horse breeds, with only around 200 remaining in the wild. Isolated and protected in southeastern Oregon, they have retained an exceptionally pure Spanish Barb and Sorraia lineage and are known for their striking dun coats, distinctive zebra-like leg markings, and alert ears - always a plus when photographing them! Dedicated breeders, like Clearview, play an important role in preserving this remarkable breed.
Alvaro was the farm's first born kiger colt and he was around 5 years old when I worked with him. I had visited the farm several times before the shoot and hand-picked him for his magnificent mane and the striking contrast between its colour and his rich chestnut coat.
When multiple lights, large backdrops, cables, generators, cameras and strangers are involved, any horse shoot is hard, but his was the most challenging of the day. As a stallion, he made it abundantly clear that he had no intention of being guided by me. Instead, I was entirely at his beck and call, waiting for the moments when he was willing to let me in.
