I was on the Isle of Arran in between a relocation with my family from New York to Toronto. It had been a crazy few months - with some more in front of us - so I’d been looking forward to unwinding for a few days on the island I’d grown up holidaying on. I headed out before sunrise one morning with a couple of key stops in my mind. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eLochranza was the last one and I couldn’t have timed it more perfectly. I wouldn’t be able to count the number of times I’ve visited, driven past or explored the castle, but I had never seen it quite like this. The tide was so far out that it revealed an immense carpet of seaweed and the light from the sunrise brought out the beautiful golden tones. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe steely sky was the perfect pairing. For me, Scotland is at its best when it’s moody and dramatic. They live in semi-wild herds, looked after by the Camargue Gardians, who use them to herd the region's famous black bulls. I spent three days around the Aigues-Mortes area, dividing my time between the woodlands, beaches and marshes.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSunrise is my favourite time to photograph horses. The heat of the day hasn't quite arrived, and the light is soft, golden and beautiful. On this particular morning, I'd been in the marsh for a while with a group of around twelve horses and their Gardians. They were being moved from one end of the marsh to the other, stopping halfway to rest in the water.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAs is so often the case, I'd actually been photographing a different part of the herd when I turned around and saw these two together. I couldn't have asked for a better composition. The gentleness of the mare's gaze in front draws you straight in. They’re one of Britain's rarest native pony breeds, and alongside a small Buddhist community, Saanen goats and Soay sheep, they live largely undisturbed. The hike to the Mullach Mòr peak takes roughly 3.5 hours, and it’s not an easy climb. Some stretches are near vertical, the flies can be horrendous in summer and the marsh areas have a habit of swallowing your foot up over the ankle.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSo, it was a somewhat tricky task to keep the family’s spirits up when, for the first 2.5 hours, not a single pony was to be found. Thankfully, on the way down in one of the valleys we came across a beautiful herd. Several different groups, some with new foals, and some grazing on their own. The pony here was leading his group to the brilliantly green grass on the slope. He stopped to look around, making sure the rest of his group was not far behind him.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAt that moment, the wind caught his mane as the sun cast a beautiful glow along his crest and back. This breed is generally grey, having faded from the black coat the foals are born with. According to local folklore, the Chincoteague ponies arrived on the islands after surviving the wreck of a Spanish galleon during a storm and swimming ashore. Historical evidence, however, suggests they are descendants of domesticated horses brought from the mainland by farmers in the late 17th century to avoid livestock taxes and fencing laws. However they ended up here, they’ve certainly made it home.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI had been out since sunrise tracking the horses in the inner areas of the island, but I knew as it got hotter, I may well find some on the beach cooling off in the water and seeking much needed relief from the flies. I first met the farm's owners after a recent relocation to Toronto and our mutual love of horses sparked an idea. I hadn't come across the Kiger horse before. This rare Spanish mustang is one of the world's rarest horse breeds, with only around 200 remaining in the wild. Isolated and protected in southeastern Oregon, they have retained an exceptionally pure Spanish Barb and Sorraia lineage and are known for their striking dun coats, distinctive zebra-like leg markings, and alert ears - always a plus when photographing them! Dedicated breeders, like Clearview, play an important role in preserving this remarkable breed.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAlvaro was the farm's first born kiger colt and he was around 5 years old when I worked with him. I had visited the farm several times before the shoot and hand-picked him for his magnificent mane and the striking contrast between its colour and his rich chestnut coat.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhen multiple lights, large backdrops, cables, generators, cameras and strangers are involved, any horse shoot is hard, but his was the most challenging of the day. As a stallion, he made it abundantly clear that he had no intention of being guided by me. The area is home to an ancient breed of horse indigenous to this area and believed to be descended from prehistoric horses. The Camargue horses run relatively freely under the stewardship of Les Gardians, the Camargue cowboys, who use them for livestock management and to guard the wild, black bulls used in local bullfights. The marshes and wetland areas they’re found in as well as the numbers in their herds provide a fantastic opportunity for some very special photography.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe sun had just risen when I took this shot. Twelve horses in total were heading into the middle of the water enjoying some respite from the mosquitos which are rife in the marshland area.
